Sam Smith has revealed they are feeling increasingly "maternal" and hope to start a family in the future, saying the desire to have children has grown stronger with age.
The 34-year-old singer, who is engaged to fashion designer Christian Cowan, opened up about their hopes for parenthood while discussing their new single, Oh Mother, during an appearance on BBC Radio 2's Breakfast Show with Sara Cox.
Smith explained that the song was inspired by their mother, Kate Cassidy, and the protective love she has always shown.
"In this song I was just trying to access my mum's fury and protection that comes to save the day when a child gets hurt or heartbroken," they said.
"As I'm getting older I feel like I'm becoming more maternal and more definitely hungry one day to have children myself and things like that.
"So it definitely felt like a maturing theme to step into for me, which was really great."
The Grammy-winning star also praised the unwavering support they have received from their family throughout their career.
"Oh my gosh, yeah, I mean my dad and my mum, my sisters, my whole family have been a rock for me through everything I've gone through," Smith added.
Elsewhere, the singer recently admitted they still think about an entirely different career path despite their global music success.
Speaking on the Dish podcast, Smith joked that they remain "gutted" they never became a fishmonger.
"I'm still gutted I'm not a fishmonger," they said. "Honestly, I used to go to Waitrose a lot as a kid and the fish section, I just loved. I like to handle fish. It felt very calming."
Now living in New York, Smith also revealed they miss traditional British fish and chips, saying they have yet to find the same taste overseas—or even consistently back home in London.
They singled out Marshall's in Whitley Bay as their favourite fish and chip shop, adding that when people talk about fish and chips, "they're not talking about the same fish and chips I am."
