Tina Fey has unveiled why the Mean Girls original cast reunion didn't happen for the new  musical film, which is set to release on January 12, 2024.

In an interview with The New York Times, Fey talked about that there were rumors about Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert having small roles in the Mean Girls musical film.

During the conversation, when the 30 Rock actress was asked about how the Mean Girls’ original cast would've looked like in the musical film, Fey responded with, "We'll never know."

The 53-year-old actress said, "They're busy people, so it didn't come together, but we tried, and we all love each other."

Fey, who wrote the original screenplay and reprised her role in the new Mean Girls musical film, also expressed gratitude for the 2004 movie.

She said, "I have other things that I'd like to do. But I have so much gratitude that this movie seemed to stick with people."

The Sisters actress went on to say, "When I look at it, I am reminded of how hard I worked on it in the first place."

She said, "Tina and I sort of dabbled with a few ideas, but it was tough to make it all work in the end."

The Notebook actress also explained why she didn't join Lohan, Seyfried, and Chabert in a Mean Girls' inspired Walmart commercial in November.

McAdams said, "I guess I wasn't that excited about doing a commercial if I'm being totally honest. I've never done commercials, and it just didn't feel like my bag."

"I would, of course, always love to be part of a Mean Girls reunion and hang with my Plastics. But yeah, I found that out later," she added.
