Harry Connick Sr. father of Harry Connick Jr. breathes his last at 97

Harry Connick Sr. the father of singer Harry Connick Jr. passed away at the age of 97.

As reported by PEOPLE, the longtime district attorney of New Orleans’ death was confirmed by multiple outlets including the Associated Press.

Connick died peacefully at his home in New Orleans with his family, consisting of his wife, Londa, and children, Suzanna and Harry Jr., according to the pianist’s publicist.

In a statement, Jason Williams, the current New Orleans district attorney, sympathized with the Connick family.

He wrote, “Mr. Connick remains the longest-tenured District Attorney, serving from 1973-2003. Such a longstanding public servant gives an enormous amount of themselves to their community — as do their families. Our thoughts are with the Connick family during this difficult time.”

Representatives for Harry Sr. and Harry Jr. did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Harry Sr. was the district attorney for the city of New Orleans from 1973-2003, who won the reelections four times and retired undefeated in 2003.

According to Times-Picayune, he owned and operated two record stores in New Orleans at the time his children were born and later became among the founders of New Orleans musical organization, Krewe of Orpheus, alongside his son, Harry Jr.

Harry Sr. shared the same love for music as his son, who often made regular trips to visit his father, whom he referred to as his "hero and inspiration."

"Hangin' with my dad - my FAVORITE thing in the world! I come to see him about once a month in new orleans and it's still not enough! at 97, he continues to be my hero and inspiration... i love you sooooo much, dad!!!" he captioned a post on his Instagram, back in October.
