Cillian Murphy became first Irish-born to win Best Actor Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards for his role in Oppenheimer.

The Irish actor expressed his gratitude to director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for their support throughout his ‘exhilarating journey.’

In his acceptance speech, Murphy expressed feeling ‘overwhelmed,’ adding, “I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.”

He added, “It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on for the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say.”

Murphy thanked cast and crew of the Oppenheimer, saying, “You guys carried me through.”

He further added, “We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or for worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world, so I’d really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.”

The Peaky Blinders actor's performance has garnered him widespread acclaim, earning him recognition at major award shows like the Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

The film, Oppenheimer itself received seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Nolan.

Robert Downey Jr also received award of best supporting actor for his role as of US government official Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.
