Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is reportedly planning to replace its current direct messaging system (DM) with a new feature called “XChat.”

Taking to X, this change was hinted at by X’s software engineer Zach Warunek, who responded to a user's complaint about the current DM system by saying that "the entire DM's will be gone soon."

This is the latest update in a series of sweeping changes implemented by Musk since acquiring the platform.

The announcement has sparked widespread panic and frustration across the platform, with many users worried about the potential loss of crucial communication channels.

Since Tesla CEO’s takeover in 2022, X's DMs have become increasingly dysfunctional due to spam, bots, and hacked accounts. Recently, X also put limits on DMs.

While details about XChat remain vague, some speculate that it could be a separate app with added features such as encryption.

However, many X users fear that the existing messaging system could be scrapped before the new one is ready, leaving them frustrated.

Moreover, users are concerned about the potential loss of past conversations and are hoping that XChat won't release at the cost of losing years of messages.
