Meta accelerates AI ambitions with wave of new hires from OpenAI
Meta’s aggressive pursuit of top AI talent continues, with the company reportedly bringing on four more researchers from OpenAI, further intensifying the competition between the two tech giants.
Following news earlier this week that the Mark Zuckerberg-led company had hired Trapit Bansal, one of OpenAI’s leading figures in AI reasoning, the company has now added four more researchers to its growing artificial intelligence (AI) team.
According to a report by The Information, the new hires include Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren.
Notably, all four have been associated with significant AI research at OpenAI, making their departure noteworthy as Meta continues to scale its AI efforts.
This hiring spree comes in the wake of Meta’s April launch of its Llama 4 AI models, which reportedly failed to meet internal expectations set by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
While the models marked a significant advancement in Meta's open-source AI ambitions, critics raised concerns over the specific version of Llama used in benchmark comparisons, suggesting the performance may have been overstated.
It should be noted that the rivalry between OpenAI and Meta has also grown increasingly personal.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently claimed that Meta had attempted to lure away his staff with offers as high as $100 million in signing bonuses.
However, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth disputed the simplicity of Altman’s claims, clarifying to employees that the offers were more nuanced and targeted senior roles.
