Brazilian singer Preta Gil breathes her last amid cancer treatment

At only 50-years-old, Brazilian singer Preta Gil, whose real name is Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira, passed away, leaving behind a powerful legacy and a nation of heartbroken fans.

After a long and courageous two year battle with colon cancer, the singer and television host’s family came forward and broke the heartbreaking news of her passing.

A statement shared on the Vá Se Benzer hitmaker’s Instagram account, on Monday, July 21, 2025, announced the sad news of her death. 

"Our beloved Preta Gil will be greatly missed, Pretinha passed away on the afternoon of last Sunday, July 20th, after a long and courageous cancer battle," the statement, which was written in Portuguese read.

Continuing, "The wake will be held in the city of Rio de Janeiro, family, friends and the public will be able to pay their last tributes. As soon as we have a definition about date, schedule and location, we will disclose it here."

As reported by Daily Mail, Petra had been undergoing treatment for her cancer in New York when she passed away.

The outlet had also reported that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023.

Taking to Facebook, the singer’s father informed their relatives of their loss and requested privacy as their family deals with the loss.
