‘Wednesday’ season two promotion: An ode to Jenna Ortega’s refreshingly fierce style

Jenna Ortega has set the internet ablaze with her many looks for the promotion of Wednesday season two’s release, not just because of how stunning the style choices have been, but also because they fiercely and unapologetically define her.
As the young stars of today, in great part led by Zendaya perhaps, have come to perfect the art of ‘pulling from the archives’ — picking clothes from old fashion catalogues which are now preserved through archival restoration — and ‘referencing’ whatever work they are in the middle of promoting, Jenna proved to be a breath of fresh air in an endless landscape of copies in the name of paying tribute through recreation.
What has been described by W Magazine as “ghostly glamour”, the Scream actress’ stylist, Enrique Melendez has announced as being “with it” through his Instagram.
Indeed, the 22-year-old star has really come into her own during the latest press tour; with her bleached eyebrows and dark makeup becoming the talk of the town.
Naturally, as with everything that hits online spaces these days, not all of the reactions have been welcoming.
However, what is clear about Jenna’s new style transformation is that not only is she willing to shatter expectations, she is also in fact helping curate a new guide all on her own.
By not recreating looks from the show which she is currently promoting, or even referencing her character’s style (someone who also happens to be a child, unlike the actress playing her), the new Tim Burton regular has tapped into an entirely different persona through her style, one which is only related to her.
She has worn only a single black dress during the promotions so far, accentuated with ‘heroin chic’ make-up, the look is a far cry from the tame black clothes she is used to wearing as Wednesday Addams.
Striking a confident pose in front of the cameras, gone is the former child star who rose through the ranks of Disney and by portraying secondary roles like the one she played on another Netflix production, You.
In her place, a fashionable young diva has risen, someone who is not afraid of making bold strides with her avant garde looks, shedding the image her fans and general public previously associated with her.
Fittingly then, Jenna was styled by her stylist in a reptile inspired dress from Ashi Studio, which was described by the fashion house in an Instagram post as “a second skin”.
Featuring snake-like features such as “exotic hides and snake sheds, their scales, faded textures, and raw edges”, the look represented a rebirth of Jenna Ortega, through fabric which stylistically outlined the process of a snake shedding its skin — a symbolic manifestation.
