Celebrities you didn’t know used to be best-friends: Shocking friendship breakups

We often hear about celebrity romances ending, but what about their friendships? Ending things with a partner hurts but losing your best friend can feel even worse.

Best friends are like your soulmates, they know everything about you, hold on to your secrets, share a laugh with you, and are there for you like family. They are like your soulmates and are there through your ups and downs. But when that bond breaks, it cuts deeper than breaking up with your romantic partner.

Celebrities may live lavish and glamorous lives but they aren’t immune to this kind of heartbreak. Losing a best friend can also be a devastating moment for them.

Just like us, they too face painful best friend breakups, reminding us that even Hollywood’s strongest bond and connection can come to an end.

Here are some of the celebrities friendship breakups that may either shock you or slipped ur mind:

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato

Meeting on the set of Barney & Friends in 2001 at seven years old, Demi and Selena formed a childhood friendship that only deepened and grew stronger in their Disney Channel teen years.

With a friendship so strong, Disney even cast the two stars alongside each other in the beloved 2009 movie Princess Protection Program.

However, with time cracks started to develop in the once strong friendship. As the two grew older, their connection with one another began to change. In 2010, Selena’s closeness with Taylor Swift began to highlight the drift between her and Demi.

When a fan asked the Confident hitmaker about her friendship with the Wizards of Waverly Place star, she didn’t hold back and quipped, "Ask Taylor."

In the same year, the Sonny with a Chance actress then further reflected on their friendship, saying, "We're both busy, and I wish the best for her. True friends don't let their friends or family be mean to you. If you can't trust somebody, you can't be friends with them."

According to some sources, Demi felt that the friendship was getting more one-sided and it was no longer mutual. She believed that Selena wasn’t supportive or there for her, especially when she was struggling with an eating disorder and self harm.

In 2014, Selena acknowledged this herself while talking to Seventeen, admitting, " She was going through things, and I was so young, and it was confusing. I processed it saying, 'OK, I don't understand what she's going through, so I'm just going to do this.' I don't think it was fair."

After her drug overdose in 2018, the Cool for the Summer singer made the decision to unfollow Selena and many other people on Instagram, explaining that she needed to "focus on herself."

And in 2020, after Demi’s emotional comeback with a powerful Grammy performance, The Only Murders in the Building actress took to her social media with unexpected praise for her former friend.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Demi addressed Selena’s message, expressing, "When you grow up with somebody, you're always going to have love for them. But I'm not friends with her, so it felt.

"I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best," she added.

Seth Rogen and James Franco

Seth and James’ friendship brewed while they were filming for the 1999 series Freaks and Geeks.

Their on-screen friendship extended to real life as the two collaborated on several productions Pineapple Express, This Is the End, The Disaster Artist and The Interview.

However, their decades-long bond took a turn in 2018, after the 47-year-old actor reportedly faced allegations of sexual misconduct by five women, four of whom were his acting students.

In 2021, James ended up settling the lawsuit with the two former students after admitting he had relations with students while teaching college students.

After the legal proceedings quieted down, Seth candidly shared with The Sunday Times, "The truth is that I have not and I do not plan to work with Franco right now."

In 2024, during a conversation with Variety, James gave an update on his past friendship with Seth saying, "I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me."

Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods

At one point, Kylie and Jordyn’s friendship was so strong it seemed unbreakable. But in February 2019, when rumours began to spread that Jordyn had been spotted getting cozy with Tristain Thompson.

The scandal gained fuel when it was revealed that she had shared a kiss with Tristain. At the time the NBA player was dating Kylie’s sister Khloé Kardashian, with whom he shared a child with.

Khloé and Tristain have since welcomed another child.

Although the Kardashian sister ended up giving Tristain another chance, in 2021 they had called it quits.

Meanwhile, the American media personality chose to step back from her friendship with Jordyn.

A source came forward and spoke to Us Weekly about the situation, saying, "She was very conflicted initially, but after observing all the chaos across the board, she knew she had no choice to step away from the friendship."

In July 2023, Kylie attempted to reconnect with Jordyn and a year later, she revealed on The Kardashians that their friendship now has "a lot more healthy distance," adding that they only talk "once a month." 

Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa

In November 2022, speculation of an alleged feud between Selena and Francia sparked after the 33-year-old pop-star and actress remarked that Taylor Swift was her only friend in the industry.

In response, the 37-year-old actress, who had donated her kidney to the Emilia Pérez starrer back in 2017 while she battled lupus, expressed her discontent with Selena’s comments, and reacted by commenting "interesting," on the post and proceeded to unfollow her.

The Good For You hitmaker took to TikTok to address the matter, saying, "Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know."

But signs of a reconciliation emerged in July 2023 when Selena took to Instagram to celebrate the Grown-ish star’s birthday.

In the sweet wish, she called her special human being and further expressed, "No matter where life takes us, I love you."

Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow

Despite sharing a close bond dating back to 1999, a source came forward and spilled the beans that things came crashing down for the pair 11 years later, in 2010.

Talking to Us Weekly, an insider revealed that the two are no longer on speaking terms.

"I can't tell you exactly why they had the falling out, but Gwyneth can be jealous and competitive," the source shared.

In the same year, in April, the 52-year-old actress and businesswoman subtly acknowledged her friendship with the 67-year-old singer, expressing that their dynamics had changed, and they weren’t as close anymore.

During her chat with British Vogue, Gwyneth shared her thoughts on Madonna’s former trainer Tracy Anderson, saying, "Yeah, it's good that Tracy doesn't train Madonna anymore. It was too much. She keeps people waiting. It takes up your whole day."
