Redford’s publicist, Cindi Berger, confirmed Robert Redford's death cause in a statement, sharing that the actor died peacefully in his sleep.

“Robert Redford passed away on Sept. 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy,” Berger said.

While there were no additional details about his health, it is clear that Redford's last moments were spent in comfort at his most beloved place.

A legacy to remember 

Redford gained popularity in the 1960s and became one of Hollywood's top stars during the 1970s.

His role as the Sundance Kid alongside Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid remains one of cinema’s most iconic pairings.

He went on to star in The Sting, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and All the President’s Men, a landmark film about investigative journalism.

His role as John Gage in Indecent Proposal was loved by many fans for a long time 

Moreover, Redford also left his mark as a director and producer. He won an Academy Award for directing Ordinary People in 1980 and received an honorary Oscar in 2002 for his contributions to the film industry.

Personal life and legacy

Redford has been married twice. His present wife, Sibylle Szaggars Redford, is an environmental artist from Germany. They first met in 1996 and tied the knot in 2009.

Before this, he was married to Lola Van Wagenen from 1958 until 1985, and they had four kids together.

Two of their sons, James and Scott, died years ago, while their daughters, Shauna and Amy, are still alive.

Redford continued acting into his later years. His last roles were in Our Souls at Night (2017) and The Old Man and the Gun (2018). Both movies showcased his strong presence on screen.
