Apple is known worldwide as one of the most valuable and recognisable tech companies.

From the first iPhone to the MacBook, the Cupertino-based tech giant has shaped the way the world experiences technology.

But even Apple’s journey has been marked by high-profile failures, i.e., products that either fell flat in the market or damaged its reputation.

Here’s a closer look at some of the company’s most infamous product failures of all time.

1. Apple Newton MessagePad

Launched in 1993 as one of the first personal digital assistants, the Apple Newton introduced handwriting recognition but failed miserably due to poor accuracy, bulky design, and a high price.

Despite its role in advancing ARM chip technology, Steve Jobs killed it in 1998, calling it a distraction.

2. Apple USB mouse

Debuting with the colorful iMac G3 in 1998, Apple’s circular USB mouse looked futuristic but was nearly impossible to use.

Its awkward shape, short cord, and poor ergonomics frustrated users, and Apple quickly retired it after just two years.

3. The Butterfly keyboard

Introduced in 2015, Apple’s ultra-thin Butterfly keyboard was supposed to revolutionise laptop design. Instead, it became infamous for stuck keys, double-typing, and widespread reliability issues.

The company resisted fixing it for years, offering extended repairs before finally scrapping it in 2020.

4. The iPod Hi-Fi

In 2006, Apple tried to dominate the home audio market with the $350 iPod Hi-Fi speaker.

Despite its premium design and sound, it couldn’t compete with cheaper, more versatile options from rivals. Therefore, Apple discontinued it within two years.

5. The AirPower charger

Launched in 2017, AirPower was meant to wirelessly charge an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once.

However, Apple’s ambitious design led to overheating and engineering failures.

After a few years, the company officially canceled the project in 2019, one of its rare public admissions of defeat.
