It is the royal competition that the tabloids simply can not stop: Meghan Markle vs Kate Middleton.

Whenever the Duchess of Sussex leaves the house in a smooth coat of beige, or slips into a boat-neck dress, or initiates a charitable cause, Princess of Wales comparisons are all over the headlines.

Is it that Meghan is copying Kate, or are we witnessing two women trapped in a centuries old play that they were meant to play?

Since Meghan entered the royal circle, the similarities were impossible to resist. They are both stylish, camera ready and wed to princes. They both promote contemporary causes and they both have the knowledge on how to make a photo op appear seamless.

But, just as Kate has been nurtured within the Palace framework, Meghan had created her own brand on being independent and Hollywood glamour. They are frequently overlapping in style but on entirely different grounds. Opponents harp on the similarities in wardrobe of Meghan: muted colors, customized shapes, even shared accessories.

The proponents of the concept respond by saying that royal wear is so strict that there is no way there is going to be overlapping. There is something more serious behind the fashion talk which is the obsession of the population with the ideal princess model.

When Meghan goes out, she is referred to as rebellious. In the case of her congruence with it, she is referred to as a copy. The reality is more straightforward and more exposing, namely that Meghan and Kate are the creations of one and the same institution, influenced by the same demands but all manoeuvring them in different directions.

Both are what the monarchy would wish to present--and what it would lose. The imitation allegations do not tell as much about the decisions made by Meghan, but rather about the culture that requires royal women to appear like that, but never too unusual. Ultimately, maybe it is not Kate that Meghan is imitating. She is imitating a system in which there can be only one type of princess in the world.
