King Charles removes Prince Andrew’s titles in family-backed decision
Prince Andrew stripped of royal titles: King Charles and family support decision
King Charles was not alone in the decision to strip his brother, the former Prince Andrew, of all his royal titles.
The 76-year-old monarch had the backing of the wider royal family, who were actively involved in discussions leading up to the announcement.
On Thursday, October 30, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 65-year-old disgraced royal will no longer be referred to as a prince or His Royal Highness.
King Charles revealed that from now onwards, Andrew will be regarded simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, as his last remaining title, 'Prince,' has also been stripped of.
"His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew," the statement read.
It added, "Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor."
While the decision was made under King Charles' Royal Prerogative, which allows him to manage certain royal titles and honours without involving Parliament, he did so with the support of his royal family, including his son and heir, Prince William.
A source told PEOPLE that the statement also "sensed a female touch,” speculating Queen Camilla and Kate Middleton were involved in the decision.
"I would think the Queen had a hand in that," the source said, adding, "There would have been a push from Camilla and Catherine, and there was pressure from William, who would not want to inherit the headache."
The insider continued, "There was pressure from William, who would not want to inherit the headache. It was a family decision.”
“It was quite strong, and I was quite proud when I heard it,” the tipster concluded.
In addition to losing his royal titles, Andrew will also be leaving his residence at Royal Lodge in Windsor, relocating to an unnamed property on the Sandringham estate, marking another step back from royal life.
