Trump says Nvidia’s most powerful AI chips are ‘for America only'
Donald Trump has made it clear that Nvidia’s advanced AI chips won’t be leaving American soil anytime soon
US President Donald Trump has made it clear that Nvidia’s most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips won’t be leaving American soil anytime soon.
In a recent interview on CBS’ 60 Minutes, Trump said the company’s top-end Blackwell chips will be strictly reserved for US customers, effectively cutting off China and other nations from accessing the world’s most powerful AI hardware.
“The most advanced, we will not let anybody have them other than the United States,” Trump said, repeating the same point to reporters aboard Air Force One. “We don’t give the Blackwell chip to other people.”
The statement marks a potential tightening of US export controls on AI semiconductors, beyond what current officials have publicly indicated, as Washington continues its push to maintain dominance in the global AI race.
Nvidia recently announced plans to supply over 260,000 Blackwell chips to South Korean companies, including Samsung Electronics, but Trump’s remarks raise questions about whether similar exports will face new scrutiny.
When asked about China, Trump said he might allow less powerful versions of the Blackwell chip to be sold, but “not the most advanced.”
Critics in Washington immediately slammed the idea, with Rep. John Moolenaar comparing it to “giving Iran weapons-grade uranium.”
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has said the company hasn’t applied for Chinese export licenses, noting that “Beijing doesn’t want Nvidia there right now.”
