Former US Vice President Al Gore has accused Bill Gates of retreating from his stance on the climate crisis out of fear of Donald Trump’s influence.

Speaking at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, Al Gore suggested that the Microsoft founder’s recent comments downplaying climate action may have been a response to “Trump’s bullying tactics”.

Gore called Gates’ new position “silly” and “disappointing”, adding that Trump, who has repeatedly promoted fossil fuels and rolled back green policies, is “doing massive damage to the US economy”.

He further claimed that China now exports more green technology than all US fossil fuel exports combined, a trend he said was accelerating because of America’s political stance under Trump.

Gates, who recently argued that climate action should take a backseat to global health priorities, faced widespread criticism from scientists and environmentalists.

Gore said Gates’ statements shocked climate experts, adding that the only person praising him was Donald Trump himself.

It is worth noting that Al Gore and Bill Gates were once seen as allies on environmental issues, but Gore now argues that framing climate and health as competing causes is “wrong and dangerous.”
