Princess Diana’s secret admission about Prince William, Prince Harry proved decades later
Princess Diana feared ‘harm’ for her two sons William and Harry
Princess Diana’s infamous interview on the BBC Panorama programme came to fill the late royal with deep regret regarding her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, a friendly source has revealed.
Described by PEOPLE as Diana’s “close friend”, Rosa Monckton told the magazine, “She told me she regretted doing it because of the harm she thought it had done to her boys.”
Years later, the admission rang true as the details emerged about the Panorama team – including host and interviewer Martin Bashir – confirmed their deceptive persuasion of the former Princess of Wales in securing the bombshell interview.
“She was frail and that made her susceptible to Bashir,” Monckton further explained. “He’d told her she couldn’t talk about it. She cut people out because of that.”
For context, the scandal about Diana’s interview was uncovered in 2021, when a probe into the matter found that Bashir had employed “deceitful” methods to induce paranoia into the would-be subject of his interview, including forgery of documents.
While the interview was pulled by the BBC and is no longer available to watch in its entirety via official channels, the controversy is being re-examined ahead of the release of a new book exploring it — Dianarama: Deception, Entrapment, Cover-Up — The Betrayal of Princess Diana by Andy Webb.
Both Prince William and Prince Harry had also voiced their criticisms against the BBC and Bashir when the scandal first broke.
“She was failed not just by a rogue reporter but by leaders at the BBC who looked the other way rather than asking the tough questions,” said William. While Harry had simply stated that “our mother”, Princess Diana, “lost her life because of this.”
