Ever felt awkward sharing a Gmail address created years ago during your school days? There is now some relief.

Google has quietly rolled out a long-awaited feature that allows Gmail users to change their email address without losing their data or services.

According to an update on Google’s account help page, Gmail users can now replace their existing @gmail.com address with a new one while keeping all emails, files, photos, and subscriptions.

The feature is rolling out gradually and has so far been spotted only on Google’s Hindi-language support page, suggesting the initial launch may be focused on India or other Hindi-speaking regions.

The tech giant noted that the update will eventually reach users worldwide, though no official timeline has been shared.

Interestingly, Google’s English-language help page still states that Gmail addresses “usually cannot be changed,” indicating the rollout is still in its early stages.

Under the new policy, a user’s original Gmail address will remain active as an alias. Emails sent to the old address will continue to arrive, and users can still sign in to Google services such as Drive, Maps, and YouTube using the previous address.

Previously, changing a Gmail address required creating a new account and manually transferring data, often disrupting app connections.
