Meta plans to test AI pendant next year in major hardware ecosystem expansion
Meta aims to sell 10 million wearable devices in the second half of 2026
Meta Platforms is reportedly preparing to trial an AI pendant as early as next year, in a move that represents a considerable broadening of its hardware ecosystem.
According to reports published on Friday, the primary objective behind this roadmap is to drive wider adoption of its AI assistants whilst reversing significant financial losses within its hardware division.
Internal memo reveals expansion strategy
An internal memo authored by Alex Himel has revealed that the owner of Facebook and Instagram is reportedly looking to substantially broaden its range of AI glasses. The company is also said to be developing a business-focused service under the working title "Wearables for Work."
The disclosure comes on the back of a difficult financial period for Meta's hardware unit, Reality Labs, which recorded a loss of $4.03 billion in the first quarter alone, against revenue of just $402 million.
Ten million devices targeted by end of 2026
Further details from the reports indicate that Meta is aiming to sell 10 million wearable devices in the second half of 2026.
The company intends to achieve this target by marketing its existing product range alongside the launch of newly designed devices to boost overall volume.
Meta has already secured partnerships with EssilorLuxottica brands Ray-Ban and Oakley to develop AI-powered smart glasses, giving it an established foothold in the wearables market.
Limitless acquisition accelerates AI wearables push
The tech giant's acquisition of AI-wearables startup Limitless forms a central part of its growth strategy. The core rationale behind the deal is to enable the recording and transcription of real-world conversations to accelerate the development of AI-generated wearables.
In a broader strategic shift, the company has moved decisively away from costly headsets and towards AI-driven accessories, seeking to embed this technology into both personal and professional everyday use.
