Apple and Google urged to remove X and Grok from app stores
Women’s rights groups has urged Apple and Google to drop X
A coalition of women’s rights groups, technology watchdogs, and progressive organisations has urged Apple and Google to remove X (formerly Twitter) and its AI chatbot, Grok, from their app stores.
The groups have accused the Elon Musk-owned platforms of generating and distributing illegal content that they say violates both Apple’s and Google’s app store policies.
The effort is aimed at increasing pressure on Musk after Grok was found to be producing sexually explicit, degrading, or violent images involving women and minors.
Backers of the campaign include the feminist group UltraViolet, the National Organisation for Women, liberal advocacy group MoveOn, and the parent-focused group ParentsTogether Action.
UltraViolet campaign director Jenna Sherman said Apple and Google must treat the issue with urgency, arguing that their app stores are enabling large-scale harm, particularly to women and children.
While X did not respond to the letter, its parent company, xAI, replied with a brief message dismissing the claims.
Notably, Malaysia and Indonesia have already banned Grok over explicit content, while regulators in Europe and the UK have launched investigations.
Moreover, the American Federation of Teachers announced it would leave the platform, citing concerns over child safety.
