Why Princess Beatrice and Eugenie’s last names didn’t change after Prince Andrew lost his titles
Before marriage, both sisters were known as Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie may be daughters of a disgraced royal, but their own status and surnames remain firmly intact.
Questions around the sisters’ last names resurfaced after King Charles stripped his younger brother, Prince Andrew, of his royal style, titles, and honors in October 2025 amid renewed scrutiny of his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the former Duke of York would now be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. So what does that mean for his daughters?
According to long-standing royal rules, the answer is: not much. Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 35, retain their titles as princesses and continue to be styled as Her Royal Highness, in line with King George V’s 1917 Letters Patent.
Their positions and titles were unaffected by their father’s fall from grace.
The clearest clue to their current last names appears in the official line of succession.
Beatrice is listed as “Princess Beatrice, Mrs. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi,” reflecting her marriage to property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Eugenie is similarly styled as “Princess Eugenie, Mrs. Jack Brooksbank,” following her 2018 marriage to Jack Brooksbank.
Before marriage, both sisters were known as Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York, a courtesy tied to their father’s former Duke of York title.
While Mountbatten-Windsor remains the official surname for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s descendants when needed, royal children traditionally use territorial designations instead.
In practice, the sisters appear to have embraced their married names. Beatrice has carried a handbag monogrammed with “BMM,” while Eugenie has been photographed wearing a jacket stitched with “Mrs. Brooksbank.”
Despite the upheaval surrounding their father, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie remain securely royal with surnames that now reflect their own families, not his scandal.
