TikTok executives assure advertisers they've 'earned trust' post joint venture
ByteDance is accompanied by a group of other participants, such as Oracle and Michael Dell
Senior TikTok leaders on Tuesday aimed to reassure advertisers that the platform has evolved into a secure and restructured business worthy of ongoing investment.
Adam Presser, CEO of TikTok’s USDS Joint Venture (“USDS” represents “US Data Security”), and Khartoon Weiss, VP & GM, Global Business Solutions, began the company's NewFronts event with short remarks regarding the platform's condition.
The joint venture was formally launched in January following years of setbacks and legal disputes over TikTok's ownership by ByteDance, based in China, which raised security issues.
Despite still holding a 19.9% stake (the largest of any shareholder), ByteDance is accompanied by a group of other participants, such as Oracle and Michael Dell.
“We have endured the challenges over the last year and persevered,” said Weiss. “It’s truly fulfilling to say that what we have created is the most robust, safest, and innovative platform we have ever assembled.”
In recent years, and spanning two US presidential administrations, organizations and government bodies have fluctuated in their concerns over user data potentially being managed by China, a nation not aligned with the US interests.
The new joint venture setup keeps the existing algorithm under Chinese oversight, which is favourable for engagement and usage, but has also been criticised as a weakness in the long-sought settlement of disputes.
Both Congress and the Supreme Court determined the app could not continue with its previous structure, but President Trump issued several delays as the details of the investor group were resolved.
Encouraged by Weiss to introduce himself, Presser mentioned spending four years in various leadership roles at TikTok.
He affirmed, “The aim to spark creativity and spread joy remains unchanged” even after the establishment of the joint venture.
Nevertheless, he continued, “I am privileged to lead this group with a clear mission: safeguarding US user data, applications, and algorithms securely within the US, supporting future business expansion, and driving the next wave of innovation.”
