Disney's Metaverse and AI investments face challenges
OpenAI is closing down its Sora image-generation platform
Just a few days into his entry as Disney’s new CEO, Josh D’Amaro is tackling two separate challenges that have put the company’s future strategies under a cloud of uncertainty.
OpenAI is closing down its Sora image-generation platform just a few months after Disney announced a $1 billion collaboration to incorporate this technology into Disney Plus.
Meanwhile, Fortnite creator Epic is dismissing 1,000 employees at a time when there’s a lack of updates about its $1.5 billion investment with Disney to create a metaverse.
There’s still a chance for Disney to integrate generative AI within its streaming platform, and maybe some form of its metaverse ambitions will be realised.
Yet, recent updates from OpenAI and Epic signal an uncertain path for some of Disney’s major initiatives.
Warning signals have always suggested that Sora wasn’t ready for high-stakes production. However, OpenAI’s choice to shut down Sora came unexpectedly, partly due to how Disney’s deal legitimised major firms partnering with gen AI companies.
In addition to pumping a large sum of money into OpenAI, the agreement with Disney — which would put AI-generated content directly on Disney Plus — gave Sora a level of authenticity that could significantly influence how the public perceives and interacts with such technology.
Disney Plus could have been overrun with AI-generated content that no one would see as a compelling reason to join the platform.
Yet, the longstanding studio could still acclaim itself for pioneering in the AI field and present that to shareholders as proof of its keen sense of leveraging tech novelties.
The narrative now looks very different — especially with OpenAI currently in the spotlight for aiding the Pentagon in conducting extensive surveillance.
Disney appears eager to sever its association with OpenAI, which is logical, but this move only underscores how ill-conceived it was for D’Amaro to lead the collaboration from the start.
