Wikipedia has tightened its rules on artificial intelligence (AI), banning editors from using AI-generated text in articles while still allowing limited use of the technology in the editing process.

Under the updated policy, the use of large language models (LLMs) to generate or rewrite article content is now prohibited.

The move clarifies earlier guidance, which discouraged creating full articles with AI but left room for interpretation.

The decision comes as AI tools rapidly gain traction across media and publishing, raising concerns about accuracy, reliability and editorial integrity.

Within Wikipedia’s vast volunteer editor community, the issue has sparked ongoing debate.

According to reports, the policy change was put to a vote and received overwhelming support, passing by a margin of 40 to 2.

Despite the stricter stance, Wikipedia has not banned AI entirely. Editors are still allowed to use LLMs for basic copyediting suggestions on their own writing, provided the output is carefully reviewed and does not introduce new information.

The platform warned that AI tools can unintentionally alter meaning or add unsupported claims, even when given simple instructions. As a result, human oversight remains essential.

The update reflects Wikipedia’s effort to balance innovation with its core principle of verifiable, human-reviewed knowledge, at a time when AI-generated content is becoming increasingly difficult to detect.
