How Korean skincare can keep your skin youthful in 40s, according to a dermatologist
From morning cleansing to evening peptides, this dermatologist shares the step-by-step K-beauty routine
If your social media feed is overflowing with serums promising to erase wrinkles or mimic the effects of cosmetic procedures, you’re not alone.
The “Botox in a bottle” trend has dominated beauty feeds, but dermatologists said the real secret to ageless skin lies in a consistent, science-backed routine, not a single product.
Dr. Marie Jhin, a board-certified dermatologist and author of The K-Beauty Secrets: Accessible Beauty for Every Woman, shared her insights on how Korean skincare can support healthy, youthful skin, especially for women in their 40s.
“In Korea, the focus is never on dramatic changes, it’s on looking refreshed and natural,” Dr. Jhin said.
“That mindset, combined with the right ingredients and consistency, is what makes K-beauty so effective for women navigating this stage of life.”
Understanding ageing in your 40s
- Dr. Jhin highlights two key periods of accelerated ageing: one in your 40s and another in your 60s.
- “In your 40s, hormonal shifts reduce collagen production, weaken the skin barrier, and decrease hydration retention,” she explained.
- “Korean skincare treats this stage as skin preservation rather than anti-ageing, emphasizing layering, hydration, and barrier support.”
Morning skincare routine
- To protect and rejuvenate skin, Dr. Jhin recommends the following morning routine:
- Low-pH gentle cleanser – protects the skin’s acid mantle, which becomes more vulnerable with age.
- Hydrating toner or essence – fermented ingredients like galactomyces or bifida ferment lysate boost radiance and cell renewal.
- Vitamin C serum – brightens hyperpigmentation and supports collagen synthesis.
- Lightweight moisturiser with ceramides – strengthens the skin barrier.
- SPF 50 sunscreen – the most critical anti-ageing step.
Evening skincare routine
Evening routines are focused on repair and nourishment:
- Double cleanse – oil-based first, then water-based, to prep skin for actives.
- Exfoliating toner (2–3x weekly) – gentle AHAs like lactic acid for smooth, glowing skin.
- Peptide or PDRN serum – signals collagen production, a popular K-beauty treatment.
- Retinol or bakuchiol – stimulates cell turnover; bakuchiol is a gentler, Korean-favoured alternative.
- Rich moisturiser or sleeping mask – locks in hydration overnight.
Hero K-beauty ingredients
- Dr. Jhin recommends incorporating these widely praised ingredients:
- Snail secretion filtrate – repairs, hydrates, and firms.
- Centella asiatica (Cica) – soothes inflammation and supports collagen.
- Niacinamide – evens skin tone, tightens pores, and strengthens the barrier.
- Hyaluronic acid & polyglutamic acid – plumps and hydrates skin from within.
Additional treatments for women in their 40s
For enhanced collagen support, Dr. Jhin notes that Korean clinics often use:
- Skin boosters – injectable hydration for a natural, plumped effect.
- PRP or PDRN treatments – derived from salmon DNA, accelerating collagen repair.
- Non-surgical tightening devices – Ulthera, XREF, and Thermage lift and firm the skin.
- Subtle botulinum toxin treatments – still effective when applied carefully in the 40s.
- “The combination of daily routine, targeted ingredients, and professional treatments can maintain youthful, radiant skin far beyond your 40s,” Dr. Jhin said.
