TLC star Rozonda 'Chilli' Thomas is revisiting the group’s now-viral 1996 Grammys speech, saying she has no regrets about publicly revealing their financial struggles at the height of their success.

Speaking to People alongside bandmate Tionne 'T-Boz' Watkins at the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2026 in Los Angeles, Chilli reflected on the moment that continues to circulate widely online.

“Oh, yes… that was a real thing,” Chilli shared, recalling how her son recently rediscovered the clip. “I’m sure the label was not happy that we said that, but it was the truth.”

The candid remarks date back to the Grammy Awards 1996, where TLC won Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals — yet stunned audiences by revealing they were financially struggling despite massive commercial success.

At the time, the group — which also included late member Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes — spoke openly about selling millions of records while not seeing that success reflected in their earnings.

“We’re not gonna sugarcoat anything anymore,” Chilli said during the press conference, adding that despite selling over 10 million albums, they were “broke as broke can be.”

Looking back, both Chilli and T-Boz emphasized that the honesty behind their words carried a larger purpose.

“We hope that our story was helpful to many other artists,” Chilli said, noting how the group has since taken control of their business decisions. “We’ve learned so much… we don’t play those games.”

Today, TLC continues to celebrate its legacy while connecting with new generations of fans.

The group recently performed a medley of hits including No Scrubs and Waterfalls at the iHeartRadio Music Awards alongside Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue.

The trio of iconic acts is now set to hit the road for the “It’s Iconic” Tour, kicking off on August 15 in Tennessee and running through October, bringing their enduring ‘90s sound to audiences across the United States.
