Mom allegedly 'sang and danced' before killing her baby
Red is currently held in the King County Jail with a bail set at $500,000
A Washington state mother was reportedly caught on video "singing and dancing" before she allegedly ended her baby's life with fentanyl. Prosecutors claim she "went to great lengths to create a story" proving her innocence.
Safarah Red, 33, is facing charges of manslaughter for the death of her 11-month-old son in 2024.
She attempted to argue that the fentanyl exposure came from an "unknown attacker" who targeted her and the child at a Seattle train station, according to court documents filed in King County Superior Court.
A probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime states Red called authorities around 2am, reporting her son was not breathing following an assault that she claimed happened three hours prior.
"During the 911 call, Red informed dispatchers that the attack took place at the Light Rail station," the affidavit details.
"She stated that she returned home, prepared a bottle for her son, and then lost consciousness on the floor."
Dispatcher notes indicate Red "sounded disoriented or affected by substances," claiming her child "might have" been exposed to something an "unknown male forced into her mouth" during the purported assault, per the affidavit.
"Dispatch guided Red with CPR instructions as the child was not breathing, but she seemed too impaired to follow these directions," the affidavit mentions. "She repeatedly said, 'I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I'm sorry!'"
Officers arrived at Red's apartment, but she allegedly did not open the door. They had to forcibly enter, discovering Red inside "sobbing uncontrollably" and expressing remorse repeatedly to herself.
Authorities found that Red's son was deceased upon their arrival, "cold to the touch" on a mattress on the floor, the affidavit reveals.
A case summary and bail request filed by prosecutors, obtained by Law&Crime, states Red told investigators a man assaulted her earlier that evening and forced a "white substance that tasted like fentanyl" into her mouth at a light rail station in south Seattle. She also allegedly said her infant might have been affected too.
"Investigators dispute this account, alleging Red was known to use fentanyl and had been under investigation by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) for drug activities involving her child," the case summary states.
"She fabricated an elaborate story about an unknown person supposedly placing a 'white substance' in her mouth while on public transport, claiming 'it tasted like fentanyl' according to her narrative."
Prosecutors note Red gave a "general depiction of this alleged attacker" to authorities in an attempt to "divert attention from her actions and prompt investigation of her claim," per the case summary.
According to the probable cause affidavit, surveillance captured Red pushing her child's stroller while "singing and dancing."
Police reviewed footage from the light rail station at the times Red claimed the attack occurred but did not locate her on video, per the affidavit.
While narrating the alleged event to the police, Red said she rushed home, placed her son on the mattress, and then lost consciousness, according to the affidavit. She allegedly discovered him "foaming at the mouth, lying just where she had left him" upon awakening.
Police reported that Red mentioned she administered "multiple doses of Narcan and placed him under the shower as she has seen on TV." She then called 911.
Prosecutors state the autopsy of Red's son "revealed norfentanyl levels indicative of likely repeated contact with the substance," as outlined in the case summary.
Red is currently held in the King County Jail with a bail set at $500,000. She is scheduled to return to court on April 28.
