In North Carolina, a woman attempting a joke on her boyfriend led to unexpected violence, as he ended up tracking her down and shooting at her vehicle, authorities state.

Shyhied Ivey, age 20, faces charges including five counts of assault with intent to kill using a deadly weapon, firing into an occupied vehicle, domestic violence, and illegal firearm possession as a felon, according to Law&Crime records.

The suspect was taken into custody at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center this past Wednesday.

On the evening of April 4, around 11:30, a group of friends, including a woman, were out grabbing food at the Camp North End shopping area in Charlotte.

Later, they opted to return "back" to Columbus Circle's 2700 block, and upon reaching there, the woman and a friend planned to carry out a joke on Ivey, her boyfriend.

The couple, who had been in a relationship for roughly five months, had a shared location setting on their phones, indicating Ivey’s ability to see her whereabouts.

The plan was to have the woman's male friend phone Ivey, pretending she was being unfaithful.

Following through with their plan, the group soon left. While journeying along Berryhill Road, Ivey started to pursue and closely follow them with his black Nissan sedan, officials reported.

Ivey, reportedly furious, called his girlfriend and drove aggressively in an attempt to get them to stop, police revealed.

The woman noted seeing what looked like a handgun being fired into the air by Ivey, based on court records.

Eventually, at a crossroad while driving their red Nissan Altima, the friends were allegedly confronted by Ivey, who discharged his gun three times into their car before fleeing.

The male friend implicated in the call shared that Ivey texted him at about 1:32 a.m. on Sunday, saying, "stop playing with me bro."

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to meet the friends approximately 10 minutes later at the location on Columbus Circle.

Authorities noted that traffic camera footage showed the black car approaching the red one at 11:38pm on April 4, with three flashes visible from the black Nissan, causing the red car’s glass to shatter.

Authorities emphasised Ivey’s status as a convicted felon. His court appearance is slated for April 23.
