Elon Musk’s Terafab seeks supplier bids as chip ambitions accelerate
Terafab is a joint effort between Tesla and SpaceX
Elon Musk’s ambitious Terafab initiative is gaining momentum, with early-stage outreach underway to major semiconductor equipment suppliers as the project moves from concept toward execution.
According to reports, companies including Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, and Lam Research have been approached to provide quotations for equipment.
Samsung Electronics is also said to have been contacted regarding potential collaboration.
First unveiled in March 2026, Terafab is a joint effort between Tesla and SpaceX. The project aims to create a fully integrated semiconductor manufacturing facility capable of handling every stage of production—from chip design to fabrication and packaging—under one roof.
Musk has set an ambitious goal of producing one terawatt of computational capacity annually, a scale that would exceed much of today’s global semiconductor output.
The chips are expected to power applications across his businesses, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous driving, while reducing reliance on external suppliers such as Nvidia and TSMC.
Recent developments include Intel confirming its participation, marking the first major industry commitment to the project.
However, sources indicate that supplier outreach has been marked by urgency, with requests issued on tight timelines and limited technical detail. This has raised questions about the maturity of the project’s planning.
While Terafab’s location and timeline remain undisclosed, the current supplier engagement signals that the initiative is still in its early stages, even as Musk pushes forward at what he describes as “lightning speed.”
