John Cena made a surprise return to the WWE spotlight at WrestleMania 42, stepping back into the franchise’s biggest event less than five months after officially retiring from professional wrestling.

The 48-year-old athlete and actor appeared at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, where he served as host of the two-night spectacle—marking a new chapter in his long WWE legacy.

Cena opened the event to loud cheers from the crowd as his entrance theme, “The Time is Now,” played throughout the arena. Dressed in a suit, he acknowledged the audience’s reaction with a mix of gratitude and nostalgia.

“Wow, I didn’t expect that. Thank you so much,” Cena said. “Sorry, long-time fan, long-time performer, first-time host. How am I doing so far?”

Reflecting on the magnitude of WrestleMania, Cena noted the intensity surrounding the annual event. “Now I see why I got the hosting gig. This is the moment I love the most, especially on the road to WrestleMania,” he said.

He went on to address the energy of the crowd and the stakes of the night, adding, “We’re all in here for the same reason… because we know the time to talk is up, the time to deliver is now.”

Cena officially welcomed fans to the show, saying, “It is such a great honor. Ladies and gentlemen, and everyone watching around the world, welcome to WrestleMania!”

His appearance comes just months after concluding his in-ring wrestling career in December 2025, following a final match against Gunther at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Cena was met with a standing ovation after the bout, where he emotionally bowed and saluted fans before exiting the ring for what was billed as his final match.

Widely regarded as one of the most decorated superstars in WWE history, Cena has since expanded his career in Hollywood and television, starring in major films such as Fast X, Argylle, and The Suicide Squad, as well as the HBO Max series Peacemaker.
