Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have launched an urgent investigation following the discovery of the remains of 50 babies and six adults at the Cumuto Cemetery.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) revealed in a media release on Saturday that the bodies were found dumped at the site, which is located approximately 25 miles from the capital, Port of Spain.

Preliminary evidence suggests the incident involves the "unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses," though forensic analysis is ongoing to confirm their origins.

Among the six adults discovered, four were male, and two were female. Police noted that all but one male had identification tags, and two of the remains showed signs of prior post-mortem examinations.

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro described the discovery as "deeply troubling," asserting that every cadaver must be handled with dignity and that any institution found violating this duty will be held fully accountable.

Crime scene investigators were immediately deployed to the area, which has been secured for further evidence collection.

The discovery comes during a period of heightened security in the twin-island nation. Trinidad and Tobago is currently under a state of emergency, which was recently extended by three months due to persistent violent crime.

Despite reports from the U.S. Embassy indicating that crime has decreased since 2024, a travel advisory was issued on Thursday, citing risks of terrorism and criminal activity.

The TTPS has committed to providing updates as more information becomes available, acknowledging the profound emotional impact this case has had on the national community.
