NYPD identifies suspect in fatal playground shooting of fifteen-year-old Jaden Pierre
State officials call for an end to gun violence following the point-blank shooting of a teenager
A manhunt is underway in New York City following the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Jaden Pierre at a Queens playground. The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Thursday at Roy Wilkins Park.
According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Pierre was involved in a physical altercation on a basketball court when he was shot once in the chest at point-blank range. Despite being rushed to Jamaica Hospital, he was later pronounced dead.
Video footage of the confrontation, which has circulated on social media, reportedly shows a group of teenagers attacking Pierre before the fatal shot was fired.
Eyewitnesses described Pierre as a "cool kid" and a talented basketball player who was a frequent visitor to the park.
The tragedy has prompted a strong response from state officials, with New York Attorney General Letitia James calling the shooting a "senseless act of gun violence" and pledging to continue efforts to improve community safety.
As of Monday, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
The NYPD has released surveillance images of a suspect described as a young man with short dreadlocks, wearing a light grey printed tracksuit and a black backpack.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline. This investigation remains active as detectives work to identify the individuals involved in the initial fight and the gunman responsible for Pierre's death.
