A renowned Massachusetts chef has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of his wife in an Amherst hotel room.

Jeffrey C. MacDonald, 36, was taken into custody on Wednesday, after police responded to an emergency call at Hotel UMass.

According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, officers discovered the body of 31-year-old Emma MacDonald in Room 413.

A police report cited by the Boston Globe alleges that Jeffrey MacDonald admitted he had the "intent" to kill his wife, claiming he beat her with his bare hands, feet, and various other objects during a "violent assault."

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers encountered the suspect, and a significant struggle ensued. MacDonald allegedly threw objects at the responding personnel, striking one officer repeatedly before he was eventually restrained.

Both the suspect and the victim were employees at the University of Massachusetts Amherst at the time of the tragedy.

Jeffrey MacDonald is a highly prominent figure in the culinary world, having been named the 2025 Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation.

The university confirmed their employment status but provided no further details regarding Emma’s specific role.

MacDonald appeared in court to face one count of murder and one count of assaulting a police officer, to which he pleaded not guilty.

A judge has ordered that he be held without bail as the investigation continues. This shocking incident has devastated the local community and the professional culinary circles in which MacDonald was a celebrated leader.
