A couple from Kentucky has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following a harrowing case of criminal child abuse involving three children.

Mary Hall and Jerome Norman were arrested in January 2025 after a child in their care exhibited "signs of torture," according to reports from WYMT and the Lexington Herald Leader.

Investigations began in December 2024 when a child returned to school with chipped teeth and a busted nose. Although Hall claimed the injuries occurred during play or sleep, evidence revealed a much darker reality within the home.

The court heard distressing testimony regarding the children's living conditions in Pike County. Prosecutors detailed how the victims were confined to a room with boarded-up windows and external locks.

Amber Hunt, the children's guardian ad litem, stated that "Food is a basic human right. It is not a punishment," noting that the children were "tortured with food." The oldest child reportedly resorted to sucking wall insulation for moisture.

During the sentencing at Pike County Judicial Centre, Olivia Dotson of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services told Judge Eddy Coleman, "These children are not serving a sentence; they are living one."

Pike County Commonwealth’s Attorney Bill Slone emphasised that the abuse was "intentional" and committed with a "clear mind."

Hall and Norman must serve 85% of their 20-year sentences before becoming eligible for parole. This tragic chapter follows a difficult history for the children, who lost their mother in a 2018 car crash and saw their father imprisoned for manslaughter prior to Hall taking custody.
