Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the state visit of King Charles to the United States will proceed as scheduled, despite a security scare involving gunfire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

On Saturday evening, a suspect was arrested after shots were fired at the high-profile event, where President Donald Trump and Melania Trump were in attendance.

Although the President remained unhurt, the incident initially cast a shadow over the monarch’s visit, which has been under preparation for several months.

The state visit, intended to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, is regarded as a high-stakes diplomatic mission.

Relations between the two nations are currently strained over several policy disagreements, and President Trump has indicated his intention to discuss "every" matter with the King.

In light of the recent scare, King Charles personally reached out to the President and First Lady to offer his support.

A spokesperson for the Palace stated: "Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of the government, we can confirm the state visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned."

The statement further noted that "The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting underway tomorrow."

This trip represents the King’s first state visit to the US as monarch, following his succession to the throne and his continued commitment to international diplomacy amidst ongoing health challenges.
