Mexico apprehends cartel leader with $5 million reward
Mexican special forces have captured Audias Flores Silva, high-ranking Jalisco New Generation Cartel commander
Mexican special forces have captured Audias Flores Silva, the high-ranking Jalisco New Generation Cartel commander known as “El Jardinero,” in what authorities are calling another major blow to one of the country’s most powerful criminal organizations.
Flores Silva was arrested Monday in the western state of Nayarit after a large-scale military operation involving more than 500 personnel, six helicopters and aerial surveillance.
Officials said the cartel leader was discovered hiding inside a roadside drainage ditch near El Mirador after security forces closed in on his location. The operation was completed without an exchange of gunfire.
The detained commander had long been considered one of the most influential figures inside the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, or CJNG, and was widely viewed as a possible successor to slain cartel chief Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as El Mencho, who was killed during a military raid in February.
Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed that Flores Silva is wanted by US authorities for extradition.
Washington had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest because of his alleged role in international drug trafficking, firearms offenses and fentanyl distribution networks.
Authorities say Flores Silva oversaw trafficking routes, drug laboratories and security operations across several Mexican states along the Pacific corridor, making him one of the cartel’s most strategic operatives.
His arrest triggered reports of retaliatory vehicle burnings and temporary road blockades in parts of Nayarit, underscoring the cartel’s ability to respond violently even after leadership losses.
Security analysts described the detention as a significant hit to CJNG’s command structure, though experts cautioned that the cartel remains deeply entrenched across Mexico and internationally, with the ability to quickly reorganise despite the loss of senior figures.
