Royal expert claims Princess Diana permanently changed public perception of royalty
Princess Diana’s decision to take her children on the tube challenged Royal parenting norms
Princess Diana is credited with fundamentally shifting the dynamics of the British Royal Family, introducing a modernity that persists decades after her passing in 1997.
In a recent discussion on the "Catching Up With The Royals" podcast, royal correspondent Emily Andrews identified the late Princess of Wales as "the second most significant person in this game."
Andrews argued that Diana’s arrival and subsequent public conduct "completely changed the way we looked at royalty," forcing an institution steeped in tradition to adapt to a more contemporary era.
A primary driver of this transformation was Diana’s remarkably hands-on approach to motherhood. Unlike the more distant parenting styles characteristic of previous royal generations, Diana was frequently seen engaging in everyday activities with her sons.
"The public narrative of her as a very hands-on mother... felt very authentic," Andrews noted, citing instances of the Princess taking her children on the London Underground, visiting fairgrounds, and enjoying standard holidays. This transparency created a sense of relatability that had been largely absent from the monarchy’s public image.
According to Andrews, these actions did more than just humanise Diana; they "forced" the rest of the Royal Family to become more accessible and hands-on with the general public.
This shift in engagement became a necessity as public expectations evolved to favour the warmth and authenticity Diana championed.
Today, her influence is still visible in the way current members of the Royal Family interact with the community and balance their public duties with private family life, ensuring the monarchy remains relevant in a modern social landscape.
