Apple reaches $250 million settlement over 'vapourware' AI Siri claims
US customers who bought flagship iPhones in late 2024 could see up to $95 back
Apple has reached a preliminary agreement to pay $250 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of misleading customers about its "Apple Intelligence" features.
The suit, filed in a California federal court, alleged that Apple used "false advertising" to sell the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro series by promising an AI-powered Siri that was not actually available at launch.
The settlement, which received initial court approval on Tuesday, covers approximately 36 million devices purchased in the United States.
Specifically, users who bought an iPhone 16 model or an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, are entitled to a piece of the fund. Depending on how many people file valid claims, payouts are expected to range from $25 to $95 per device.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs argued that high-profile marketing campaigns—including television ads featuring actress Bella Ramsey—created a "clear expectation" that a smarter, more personalised Siri would be available immediately.
In reality, while some tools like "Writing Tools" eventually arrived, the "Enhanced Siri" capable of cross-app context was significantly delayed.
Apple has denied any legal wrongdoing, stating it settled to avoid a prolonged legal battle. A final fairness hearing is scheduled for June 17, 2026, after which a claims website is expected to launch for eligible users.
