Apple iOS 27 to allow users choice of third-party AI models
Apple is reportedly working with industry rivals to power its new intelligence features
Apple is set to fundamentally shift its approach to artificial intelligence by allowing users to choose from third-party AI models within its upcoming operating systems.
According to a Tuesday report from Bloomberg News, the change will be introduced with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 this autumn.
This new capability, internally referred to as "Extensions," will enable users to select which external AI services they wish to power their device features through the system settings.
To date, Apple has been testing these integrations with major providers, including Alphabet’s Google and Anthropic. The update is designed to allow any AI model provider to opt in by adding compatibility through their respective App Store applications.
This open-platform strategy aims to close the competitive gap with rivals like Microsoft and Google, who have historically integrated generative AI features more aggressively.
Notably, Google’s Gemini is expected to serve as the primary engine for a significantly revamped Siri, which is scheduled for release later this year.
The announcement comes at a time of exceptional financial strength for the Cupertino-based firm. Last week, Apple projected a third-quarter sales growth of 14% to 17%, substantially higher than the 9.5% anticipated by Wall Street analysts.
This optimism is fueled by "blowout demand" for the flagship iPhone 17 lineup and the newly released MacBook Neo. Beyond AI enhancements, iOS 27 is also expected to include support for Apple’s first foldable iPhone and new satellite-based features for Apple Maps.
By turning its hardware into a centralised hub for various AI models, Apple seeks to maintain its premium market position while providing users with unprecedented flexibility in how they interact with emerging technologies.
