Charli XCX drops Rock Music following Sky Ferreira plagiarism allegations
The new single marks her return ahead of her upcoming eighth studio album
Charli XCX has released a new single just weeks after facing plagiarism-related controversy over her work tied to the upcoming Wuthering Heights film soundtrack.
The 33-year-old pop star dropped her latest track, Rock Music, announcing the release on Instagram on Friday, May 8, alongside a black-and-white music video directed by Aidan Zamiri.
“Song and video out now,” Charli wrote in the caption, confirming the project as part of her forthcoming eighth studio album.
The release comes shortly after allegations surfaced from singer Sky Ferreira, who claimed that elements of the Wuthering Heights soundtrack may have been derived from her unreleased demo recordings.
According to reports, Ferreira alleged that at least two tracks from the 12-song soundtrack were inspired by her previously unheard material, sparking online debate within the music industry.
Despite the controversy, Ferreira is already officially credited as a featured artist, co-writer, and vocal producer on the track Eyes of the World, which appears in the film.
In response to the claims, Charli XCX’s management issued a statement defending the singer’s creative process, stating that she “shares credits fairly and appropriately and values her collaborators tremendously.”
The management team did not directly address the specific plagiarism allegations but maintained that proper credit is always given where due.
Charli’s latest release marks her return to solo music activity as anticipation builds for her next studio album, while discussions around the soundtrack continue to circulate online.
