Life imitates art: Ted Lasso star signs pro football contract, delighting fans

In a story that feels like it was pulled directly from a script, actor Cristo Fernández, known for his role as the infectiously optimistic Dani Rojas, has signed a real-life professional football contract. The news sparked a wave of celebration and witty banter on Reddit's UpliftingNews forum.

For fans of the hit show Ted Lasso, the development was a perfect real-world reflection of his character's mantra, "Football is life!" A Reddit thread celebrating the news was quickly flooded with quotes from the series.

The top-rated comment, with over 700 upvotes, was simply "Football is life!", followed by another user adding, "Si, amigo. Futbol is life." The joyful energy of Fernández's on-screen persona, Dani Rojas, was palpable throughout the discussion.

One fan even playfully channelled the character's competitive spirit, declaring, "I have to hate him now cause he’s on my team’s rival team. This is not uplifting news!" Others explained the joke referenced a scene where Rojas becomes hostile towards a teammate when they play for opposing national teams, calling each other "enemies" for the duration of the match.

A dream realised or a PR move?

While most celebrated the news, some users questioned the signing, pointing out that at 35, Fernández is old to be turning professional for the first time. This led to a debate over whether the move was a genuine footballing decision or simply a "publicity stunt". One user commented, "Definitely. No team is signing a 35 year old to his first pro contract as a serious move."

However, others pointed out a potential upside, suggesting the signing could bring welcome attention to the USL, which is the second-tier professional league in the United States. Furthermore, commenters clarified Fernández's backstory, noting he was a promising youth player whose ambitions were derailed by a knee injury at 15.

This new contract, therefore, represents a dream reignited after two decades. As one user summarised, he was "on a pro track before knee injuries derailed it and he moved to acting. But he's clearly stayed in great shape, so why not give it another shot
