Mark Zuckerberg's wild glow-up: from hoodie nerd to jacked MMA fighter

For years, Mark Zuckerberg was the poster boy for Silicon Valley’s anti-fashion ethos. The man who built a global empire from his Harvard dorm room was known for a uniform of a grey t-shirt, a hoodie, and jeans.

He famously claimed it was to reduce "frivolous" decisions, allowing him to focus his energy on building Facebook. His public appearances were often awkward, epitomised by a now-infamous 2010 interview where he began sweating profusely under questioning about privacy, eventually being coaxed to remove his hoodie.

This image of a detached, robotic tech genius was cemented through years of controversy, from the Cambridge Analytica scandal to his stiff appearances before Congress, where he swapped the hoodie for what many dubbed an "I'm Sorry Suit." But that Zuckerberg seems to be a ghost of the past.

A fighter's mentality

The first sign of a radical shift was physical. During the pandemic, the 40-year-old billionaire traded his casual running habit for the intense, all-consuming world of mixed martial arts.

He began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and MMA three to four times a week, a change he said helped him stay focused. "After an hour or two of working out or rolling or wrestling... now I'm ready to go solve whatever problem at work for the day," he told Joe Rogan.

His dedication has produced startling results. The once-slight CEO is now visibly muscular, reportedly fuelling his gruelling workouts with a 4,000-calorie-a-day diet. He has been photographed training with UFC champions like Israel Adesanya and Alexander Volkanovski and has proven his skills are not just for show. In May 2023, Zuckerberg competed in his first BJJ tournament, winning both gold and silver medals and earning the respect of the martial arts community.

From sorry suits to swagger

Zuckerberg's wardrobe has evolved just as dramatically as his physique. Gone are the days of the simple hoodie. He's now seen in designer t-shirts, expensive cashmere sweaters, and even sporting a thick gold chain. His recent public appearances feature custom-made shirts emblazoned with bold, historical phrases. For his 40th birthday, he wore a t-shirt reading "Carthago delenda est" ("Carthage must be destroyed"), a Roman motto signalling a ruthless determination to crush the competition. Another shirt read "Aut Zuck aut nihil" ("Either Zuck or nothing"), a play on a phrase associated with Julius Caesar.

This overhaul is widely seen as a deliberate and strategic rebrand. With Meta pushing into wearable technology like its Ray-Ban smart glasses, a fashion-forward CEO makes business sense.

According to insiders, the transformation is an attempt to rewrite the narrative, shifting his image from a "tech villain" to a more relatable, resilient, and even cool leader. It's a calculated move to rebuild public trust, bolster investor confidence, and attract top talent as Meta pivots towards AI and the metaverse.

Whether a carefully crafted PR move or a genuine midlife evolution, one thing is certain: the awkward, hoodie-clad coder has been replaced by a man who looks ready to fight for his empire, both in the boardroom and in the cage.
