Vin Diesel breaks down in tears hugging Paul Walker's daughter at Cannes
Vin Diesel breaks down in tears with Meadow Walker at Cannes for the 25th anniversary of 'The Fast and the Furious'
The bond between the stars of The Fast & The Furious has always been about family, and that connection was on full, emotional display at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, 13 May 2026.
Vin Diesel, who has led the franchise for over two decades, was brought to tears while remembering his co-star and dear friend, the late Paul Walker, during a special screening marking the 25th anniversary of the first film.
By his side, offering quiet support, was Paul's daughter, Meadow Walker, who has become an integral part of the film's extended family. The event served as a poignant tribute to an actor whose presence is still deeply felt, both on and off the screen.
An emotional tribute on the Riviera
Vin Diesel arrived for the landmark screening in style, wearing a custom jacket emblazoned with the words “Fast Forever” in rhinestones. But the celebratory mood soon turned emotional as he took to the stage to speak about his bond with Paul. Overcome, Diesel broke down and embraced Meadow, who joined him in front of the audience.
"I pray that in your life you have a brother like Paul," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "It wasn't on the script at first that this blond-haired, blue-eyed guy would be a brother to me." He then turned his attention to Meadow, crediting her for being there with him. "The person who was not going to let me come alone here to represent that brotherhood was Meadow Walker," he shared, according to Variety. "I'm gonna go and shed a tear real quick."
As reported by the Hindustan Times, Vin has been a constant source of support for the Walker family since Paul's tragic death. Actors Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez, producer Neal H. Moritz, and Universal chairman Donna Langley were also present to mark the occasion.
The future of the franchise
After the screening, Diesel addressed the cheering crowd once more, looking toward the future of the blockbuster series. He officially confirmed the title of the final instalment will be Fast Forever, and it is slated for a global release on 17 March 2028.
"I just want you all to know, the only reason why we're making the finale of Fast for 2028 is because of each and every one of you that has given us your hearts and your loyalty," he declared. "You make us want to make you all proud." It has also been hinted that Diesel made the return of Paul Walker's character, Brian O'Conner, a condition for his own involvement in the finale, ensuring his brother's story receives a fitting conclusion.
A bond forged beyond the screen
The deep connection between Vin Diesel and the Walker family is well-documented. For those unversed, Paul Walker passed away in a car crash in California on 30 November 2013, at the age of 40.
His daughter Meadow was just 15 at the time. In the years since, Diesel, who is Meadow’s godfather, has remained a constant father figure in her life. In a touching display of their bond, he walked her down the aisle at her wedding to Louis Thornton-Allan in October 2021.
Meadow, in turn, has embraced her father's legacy within the Fast universe. She made a cameo appearance as a flight attendant in 2023’s Fast X, a role she said she was thrilled to take on to feel connected to her father's work. She has often expressed her gratitude for being "born into the Fast family" and for the opportunity to honour her father.
The franchise has gone to great lengths to keep the spirit of Paul's character, Brian O'Conner, alive. Furious 7 (2015), the last film Paul acted in, famously used his brothers, Caleb and Cody Walker, as body doubles, along with archival footage, to complete his scenes. The film's final moments, which saw Brian's character drive off into the sunset, served as a moving tribute that resonated deeply with fans around the world.
The powerful display in Cannes confirms that a quarter of a century later, the themes of loyalty, brotherhood, and family are stronger than ever, promising an emotional final ride for the characters and the fans who have followed them for years.
