Tom Cruise celebrates 40 years of 'Top Gun' with a nostalgic tribute
Hollywood icon Tom Cruise took to Instagram with a collection of nostalgic photos to mark four decades of his legendary film, Top Gun.
The star celebrated the milestone by announcing the return of the beloved franchise to the big screen.
A Flight Through Time
Tom Cruise has sent the internet into a nostalgic frenzy with a post celebrating the 40th anniversary of his career-defining film, Top Gun.
The 63-year-old actor shared a series of iconic images that beautifully contrasted the original 1986 blockbuster with its hugely successful 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
The gallery begins with black and white stills from the first film, featuring a youthful Cruise as the cocky pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell giving a thumbs-up from his cockpit, shaking hands with his rival Iceman (Val Kilmer), and enjoying the famous piano scene with his pals Goose (Anthony Edwards) and Charlie (Kelly McGillis).
These classic moments are paired with vibrant colour shots from the recent sequel, showing an older, more seasoned Maverick walking the deck of an aircraft carrier and sharing an intimate moment with Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly).
"I’m excited to celebrate 40 years of Top Gun with you all," Cruise wrote in the caption. "It’s so much fun to see these two films back on the big screen!"
The star’s post confirms that both films are returning to cinemas for a special one-week engagement, starting May 13, 2026.
This anniversary event will feature the original film presented in immersive formats, such as IMAX, for the very first time. Fans immediately flooded the comments, with one user calling Cruise "THE LEGEND" and another declaring, "Top Gun still my favourite movie ever." The excitement was palpable, with many echoing that they were the "best films ever made" and that they "can't wait to see it again in theatres."
An Enduring Legacy
The franchise's lasting appeal is a testament to its cultural impact. The first film, which was inspired by a 1983 magazine article detailing the lives of fighter pilots, had a real-world effect, reportedly causing a significant increase in applicants to the U.S. Navy's aviation programme.
It also left an indelible mark on fashion, with sales of Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses soaring by a reported 40 per cent after its release. Its iconic soundtrack, featuring hits like "Danger Zone" and the Oscar-winning ballad "Take My Breath Away," became a global phenomenon.
This commitment to authenticity was pushed to new limits for Top Gun: Maverick. The filmmakers developed groundbreaking camera systems to film the actors inside the cockpits of real F/A-18 Super Hornets, after they underwent a rigorous training programme to withstand the extreme G-forces of aerial combat.
The overwhelming response to Cruise's anniversary post demonstrates that four decades later, the story of Maverick continues to resonate with audiences around the world, proving that some legends never lose their need for speed.
