Yami Tokyo Horror Festival launches in November
The Yami International Film Festival is set to debut from November 20–26 at Human Trust Cinema Shibuya in Tokyo
A festival dedicated to horror and dark-themed films, the Yami International Film Festival, will celebrate its first edition from 20-26 November at Human Trust Cinema Shibuya in Tokyo, organisers announced at Cannes.
Organised by the Japan-based horror entertainment company Yami Inc., the festival will feature two competitive categories – one for feature films and one for short films – offering prizes such as best film, audience choice, among other distinctions. Recipients will be awarded monetary prizes and official trophies. Submissions begin on 27 May through FilmFreeway.
The festival's name is inspired by the Japanese word for “darkness” and it carries the motto “Darkness Makes the World Known.” Members of the jury are yet to be announced; they will include filmmakers, actors, and creators from both Japan and overseas.
Yami Inc. has gained recognition via a mix of AI-driven digital projects, gaming initiatives, and immersive “analysis-based exhibitions,” which include installations like “Did You Read That Ominous Letter?”, “A Missing Exhibition,” and “The Fear Exhibition.” This festival marks the company’s venture into the film sector.
Producer Wada Arihiro, known for works like “Fujiko” and “Kaiju Guy,” will take on the roles of festival director and programming director.
“The depiction of fear is an art form that Japan has cultivated and honed over years, leading to the production of some truly extraordinary films. Our aim is to pique global interest through the concept that ‘fear is fun.’
Through films, we wish to create a platform that showcases cutting-edge horror being developed globally. Shibuya in Tokyo will serve as a hub where audiences can discover the next big thing in horror. We eagerly anticipate your visit,” expressed Wada.
