Kylie Minogue reflects on past relationships and emotional impact of Michael Hutchence romance
The singer described their relationship as brief but deeply impactful
Kylie Minogue has reflected on her past relationships and revealed that she believes the late Michael Hutchence was the “love of her life.”
The 57-year-old pop icon made the admission in a new interview with Sunday Times Style, speaking candidly about the lasting emotional impact of her two-year relationship with the INXS frontman, who died in 1997.
“Yes, probably,” Minogue said when asked directly if Hutchence was the love of her life. “I’ve had lots of relationships, some were love, some were not. My relationship with him was not for that long, but it had a profound effect on me.”
Minogue has previously been linked to several high-profile partners, including Jason Donovan, Olivier Martinez, Andres Velencoso, Joshua Sasse, and Paul Solomons.
Despite her past romances, the singer said her connection with Hutchence stood apart due to its emotional depth and long-lasting influence on her life.
She also spoke warmly about her ongoing friendship with former Neighbours co-star and ex-boyfriend Jason Donovan, with whom she famously shared on-screen romance before dating in real life.
The pair remain close, and Donovan is even involved in her upcoming Netflix documentary project.
“We are good friends,” she said, recalling how she recently texted him while revisiting old footage of their early careers. “I told him he better start collecting things for his doc.”
Minogue reflected on how their real-life relationship grew out of their on-screen chemistry, saying, “We fancied each other. The love story in the show came first and then it became a real thing.”
The singer also described an emotional moment while watching her documentary with family members, recalling how revisiting her past brought unexpected reactions.
“It was so emotional watching it with them,” she said, adding that even her nephew reacted to iconic scenes from her Neighbours days.
Minogue admitted that filming the documentary led her to reflect deeply on her life and past, including her relationship with Hutchence, which brought her to tears during production.
“I know I’m going to cry at some point in this goddamn documentary,” she said. “But I also knew that I was holding on to a lot of stuff.”
Now, the “Padam Padam” singer says she is embracing single life, describing herself as content and more selective about future relationships.
“I realised I was OK on my own,” she said. “I’m definitely getting pickier.”
She added that one firm boundary now guides her dating life: “Narcissists. I’ve dated one, and I’m very grateful I now have that knowledge. That’s my red hot ‘no.’”
