Arizona teen, eight months pregnant, fatally shot by boyfriend in San Diego
Police say the boyfriend travelled to San Diego separately and shot the victim outside her rental
A 17-year-old girl from Arizona, who was eight months pregnant, has been shot dead whilst visiting San Diego. Her newborn baby, delivered via emergency surgery, remains in critical condition.
The shooting took place at approximately 1:10 a.m. local time on Saturday, in the 4900 block of Gardena Avenue.
The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) confirmed the incident to NBC 7 San Diego and Fox 10 Phoenix.
Police detail the scene on arrival
Officers arrived within minutes of the report and found the teenager with a gunshot wound to the head.
"Officers arrived within minutes and located a 17-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound to the head," said the SDPD, per NBC 7 San Diego. "The victim, who was approximately 32 weeks pregnant, was found unresponsive."
The SDPD added: "Officers immediately initiated life-saving measures for both the victim and her unborn child.
"Paramedics transported the female to a local hospital where an emergency cesarean section was performed. The newborn remains in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, the mother died at the hospital."
Victim was staying at short-term rental with family
According to detectives, the teenager had been staying at a short-term rental property whilst visiting San Diego with her family. The victim's identity has not been publicly disclosed.
Suspect arrested after fleeing the scene
Trevon Williams, originally from Arizona, was taken into custody after allegedly fleeing the scene following the shooting, according to NBC 7 San Diego and Fox 10 Phoenix, both citing police. He was discovered hiding near 4900 September Street at around 3 a.m.
Williams, aged 21, is now facing multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder.
Boyfriend had travelled to San Diego separately
The SDPD told NBC 7 San Diego that Williams was the victim's boyfriend and had made his way to San Diego independently before meeting her outside the rental property.
"The victim's 21-year-old boyfriend, also from Arizona, had travelled to San Diego separately and met up with the victim outside the rental, where he shot her," the SDPD confirmed.
