Son jailed after forcing elderly father into ‘blackened room’ and stealing life savings
A coroner’s report has revealed severe neglect in the final months of Norman Lee’s life
A newly released coroner’s report has detailed the final months of a 90-year-old man in New Zealand who was allegedly confined to a dark, unsanitary room by his son while his life savings were stolen.
Norman Lee died at Christchurch Hospital on July 9, 2020, after suffering from pneumonia and severe cardiovascular disease, according to reports.
However, a coroner’s inquiry into his death was initially paused due to parallel criminal investigations into the circumstances surrounding his care.
Police later discovered that Lee, a retired mechanical engineer, had been living in deeply neglectful conditions in the months leading up to his death.
His son, David Lee, was subsequently jailed in 2022 for six years after being found guilty of multiple offenses, including failing to provide the necessities of life, theft, and forgery.
Authorities also prosecuted another individual, whose identity remains subject to name suppression, for their role in the same living arrangements. That person received a sentence of two years and seven months in prison.
According to findings cited in the coroner’s report, Norman Lee was repeatedly locked inside a cold, damp, and permanently dark room for up to 16 hours a day.
Investigators said the window had been covered with a black sheet, ventilation was limited, and the room was kept in near-total darkness for extended periods.
Police further reported that light switches in the room had been taped off, and that Lee, who was incontinent, was forced to wear restrictive clothing over adult diapers.
CCTV cameras allegedly captured him calling for help, with no intervention from others in the home.
Officers also described extreme living conditions inside the room, including a broken heater, overwhelming odors, and a heavily soiled mattress. Entry and exit were reportedly controlled by an external deadbolt.
A forensic pathologist told investigators that Lee’s environment likely worsened his dementia and increased his frailty, making him more vulnerable to pneumonia, although a direct causal link to his death could not be definitively established.
Court findings further alleged that David Lee’s primary motive was financial gain, with stolen funds reportedly spent on travel, vehicles, and luxury items.
Authorities stated that more than $150,000 was misappropriated through theft and related offenses.
Investigators also noted delays in administering prescribed medication following a hospital discharge, which may have further compromised Lee’s health.
A sentencing judge described the failure to provide proper medical treatment as an aggravating factor.
In addition to criminal findings, a separate review by health authorities identified systemic failures in care oversight.
A social worker involved in the case was found to have made a “serious error of judgment,” while multiple home care staff were criticized for failing to report visible warning signs, including the padlocked door and surveillance cameras.
Health New Zealand acknowledged the findings, issuing an apology to Lee’s family and stating that all recommendations from the review had since been implemented.
Following the conclusion of criminal proceedings and official investigations, Coroner Mary-Anne Borrowdale ruled that the inquiry would not be reopened, stating that the circumstances surrounding Lee’s death had been sufficiently established.
