Welsh actor Owain Rhys Davies has died suddenly at the age of 44, his family has confirmed in a statement describing his passing as both “unexpected” and “peaceful.”

Davies was best known for his role as Agent Wilson in the 2017 revival of the cult television series Twin Peaks, and also appeared in projects including Impact Winter, A Serial Killer’s Guide to Life, and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

In a statement shared by his brother Rhodri, the family said the news had come as a “great shock” and paid tribute to the actor’s wide-reaching impact on those who knew him.

“It is with profound sadness that my father and I share the news that my brother, Owain, has passed away,” Rhodri said. “The reach of Owain’s love, friendship, and generosity was vast.”

He added that while the family believes Davies passed “suddenly, naturally, and peacefully,” there are still “questions that remain unanswered regarding the circumstances of his death.”

The family also thanked the public for the outpouring of support, describing Davies as someone who built deep and lasting bonds beyond his immediate relatives.

“Alongside his biological family, he built extraordinary, family-like bonds with many of his closest friends, colleagues, and loved ones,” the statement said. “He was a brother to so many others.”

Davies’ most recent work included an appearance in the independent film La Fantasia, and throughout his career he also performed on stage in West End productions such as Mamma Mia! and The Wizard of Oz.

Following news of his death, tributes poured in from colleagues and friends across the entertainment industry.

Actor Joanne Froggatt, known for Downton Abbey, said she was devastated by the loss, describing Davies as “joy and life and talent and kindness.”

She wrote that he “lit up every room he went into” and expressed heartbreak at the thought of not being able to see him again.

Actor Hayley Tamaddon, known for Coronation Street, also paid tribute, calling the news “heartbreaking” and remembering Davies as a warm and vibrant presence who brought joy to those around him.

Writer Humphrey Ker shared a similarly emotional message, describing Davies as a “gentleman” and “a giver and maker of joy,” adding that he would deeply miss his friend.

As tributes continue to emerge, colleagues and loved ones have remembered Davies not only for his screen and stage work, but for the kindness and energy he brought to his personal relationships.
