Peter Sarsgaard joins 'The Last of Us' Season 3 in new Seraphite role
Emmy-nominated actor joins HBO drama as production pauses during FIFA World Cup
Peter Sarsgaard has joined the cast of The Last of Us Season 3, taking on a recurring role as Amon, one of the leaders of the Seraphites.
The casting news emerged on Thursday as HBO's hit post-apocalyptic drama entered a planned production hiatus. Sarsgaard's character is an original creation for the television series and does not appear in the Naughty Dog video game on which the show is based.
Peter Sarsgaard Cast as New Seraphite Leader
The two-time Emmy nominee will portray Amon, a prominent figure within the Seraphites, a religious faction expected to play a major role in the upcoming season.
According to Deadline, the character has been created specifically for the HBO adaptation, marking a departure from the source material.
Sarsgaard is best known for his acclaimed performances in Dopesick and Presumed Innocent, while his recent credits include HBO's DTF St. Louis and Maggie Gyllenhaal's upcoming film The Bride!.
The Last of Us Takes Planned Production Break
The casting announcement comes as filming on Season 3 temporarily pauses for a planned mid-shoot hiatus.
Production is expected to resume after a break of approximately one month, which coincides with the FIFA World Cup. Vancouver, where much of the series is filmed, is among the host cities for the tournament, creating logistical challenges for location filming and other production activities.
After the hiatus, filming is expected to continue through the remainder of the year ahead of a planned 2027 premiere.
Season 3 Expected to Focus on Abby Anderson
While HBO has not revealed plot details for the new season, the story is widely expected to centre on Abby Anderson, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever.
The Seraphites, the faction led in part by Sarsgaard's character, play a significant role in Abby's storyline in the video game series.
Created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us follows survivors navigating a world devastated by a deadly fungal outbreak. The story originally centred on Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, and Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, as they travelled across a collapsed United States.
Craig Mazin Leads Season 3 as Sole Showrunner
Season 2 picked up five years after the events of the first instalment and expanded the show's world with new characters and conflicts.
For Season 3, Mazin will serve as the sole showrunner after previously sharing duties with Druckmann during the first two seasons.
Although HBO has not confirmed whether Season 3 will conclude the series, reports suggest it is likely to serve as the final chapter of The Last of Us.
