Former England and Manchester United Captain David Beckham was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles on Friday — even as his former friend Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly grappling with mounting financial pressures in the very same country.
The contrast was stark: while Beckham was celebrated before a large crowd of fans on the sun-drenched boulevard, reports suggest the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may struggle to sustain their current California lifestyle in the years ahead. High spending is said to be outpacing the couple's income, following the reported loss of their contracts with both Netflix and Spotify.
Harry and Meghan's financial difficulties
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior working royals and relocated to California, a move that initially appeared to offer financial independence through high-profile media deals.
However, those arrangements are now said to have collapsed, leaving the couple's long-term financial position uncertain. Reports indicate that their expenditure continues to run significantly ahead of their income, raising questions about how they will maintain their current standard of living in the coming years.
Beckham's Hollywood moment
Against that backdrop, Beckham's Hollywood honour marked a milestone moment for one of football's most globally recognised figures. Addressing the crowd gathered on the boulevard, he described the occasion as a "truly incredible moment" and reflected on the improbability of his journey.
"I've always been a dreamer, but I could never have imagined that an honor like this would come to a working-class English soccer player like me," he said. He also drew a connection between the ceremony and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being staged across the United States: "How fitting then that I am here today as we prepare to celebrate the opening here in the US of the 2026 World Cup." He added: "It's a powerful moment to recognize how the sport I love so much has grown in this country over the past three decades."
Victoria Beckham's tribute
Fashion Designer and Businesswoman Victoria Beckham — a former member of the Spice Girls — was present for the ceremony and spoke about football's growing stature in America. "Soccer in America is entering one of the most exciting chapters in its history, which makes this incredible honor feel all the more timely," she said.
